The SP2DK (Request for Explanation of Data and/or Information Letter) is an official notice from Indonesia’s Directorate General of Taxes (DGT) asking taxpayers to clarify specific data, transactions, or discrepancies. It serves as an early warning before a formal tax audit, allowing taxpayers to voluntarily address issues and maintain compliance.

As of the end of September 2025, the DGT recorded tax revenue of Rp 1,295.3 trillion, representing 62.4% of the total target for the 2025 fiscal year. This shortfall of 7.6% indicates the likelihood of intensified tax collection efforts toward the end of the year. One of the most common methods the DGT uses to close this gap is through the issuance of SP2DK letters.
Compared to a full tax audit which typically takes at least five months under the latest Minister of Finance Regulation No. 15/2025 an SP2DK is a more efficient process, requiring only 60 days to complete. Because of this, many taxpayers have recently received SP2DK letters as part of the DGT’s compliance monitoring initiative.
Taxpayers must respond to an SP2DK within 14 calendar days from the date stated in the letter, or from the date of sending (if delivered via fax, post, or courier). Failure to respond promptly or adequately can lead to a follow-up audit or additional inquiries from the tax office.
Responding to an SP2DK properly is crucial. Below are key steps to ensure an effective and compliant response:
1. Keep Your Documentation Organized
An SP2DK often targets major transactions or data inconsistencies. Ensure all relevant supporting documents are well-organized and easy to access. This includes invoices, bank statements, tax returns, and reconciliation records.
2. Reconcile Tax Data with Financial Reports
Many SP2DKs are issued because of differences between monthly or annual tax filings and audited financial statements. Regular reconciliation helps identify and correct these discrepancies early.
3. Focus on Key Figures
Given the short response window, prioritize addressing transactions and figures that have the most significant tax impact. Provide clear explanations supported by proper documentation.
After the SP2DK process concludes, the DGT issues an SP3P2DK (Notification Letter on the Progress of SP2DK Implementation). This document formally confirms the completion of the SP2DK review. It may include conclusions such as: Confirmation that the SP2DK process has been completed. A statement indicating that the taxpayer amended the relevant Tax Return following the SP2DK findings.
The SP3P2DK is signed by the Head of the Tax Office and serves as the official closure of the SP2DK procedure.
The SP2DK is a strategic and time-efficient tool used by the DGT to encourage voluntary compliance and bridge the tax revenue gap. Understanding the SP2DK process and responding effectively helps taxpayers maintain transparency and avoid unnecessary audits.
If you receive an SP2DK, don’t panic review your data carefully, prepare the necessary documentation, and consult with a trusted tax advisor. A timely and accurate response can prevent further scrutiny and demonstrate your commitment to tax compliance.
